Children's Chairs

It’s tough being a child. You’re too little for the grown up chairs but at the same time, you’re too big to go back in your highchair or sit on mummy or daddy. How can you make sure that your child is comfortable in their own home? Buy them their own special chair of course!

We have just taken a huge delivery of children’s chairs that are strictly just for kids. No adults can sit on these chairs because they’re intended for kids aged 2-5 years old! We have little pink armchairs for the girls or luxurious black reclining ones for the boys wanting a chair like their daddy’s.

The chairs come in brown, black, pink and baby blue so there is a chair for all personalities. Not only are there reclining chairs, but there are rocker chairs with accompanying footstools. The rocker chairs are currently retailing at half the recommended retail price at £49.99, so snap yours up quickly before they sell out.

All chairs are fire resistant and made to stringent safety requirements. Made from strong polyurethane, the chairs are ideal for gaming, watching TV and time outs. Easy to store out of the way when the kids are at school or away with the grandparents at the weekend, these chairs made especially for kids are the ideal option for accommodating younger family members at Christmas too.

We have thousands of dining room chairs in stock!

Christmas is just around the corner – 7 weeks to be precise. I expect you will be preoccupied worrying about Christmas presents but now is the time to consider your Christmas dinner seating arrangements. If you are having all the family over for Christmas this year, from little cousin Michael to great aunt Ethel, then you need to contemplate where they are all going to sit. Christmas dinner is rarely a short affair with plenty of eating, drinking and merriment. Hosts and hostesses want their guests to be comfortable and it is impossible to be comfortable on a kitchen stool that is the wrong height for the table.

To prevent the possibility of family members registering complaints with the management i.e. causing arguments because they’re unhappy with getting the rubbish chair, think ahead and buy extra chairs for your dining room table while you still can.

We have thousands of chairs in stock ready for the Christmas rush and we have knocked over £75 off a set of 8 faux leather dining chairs. You don’t have to buy them in sets, you can get the same chairs singularly or in pairs too as we understand that accommodating all the family at Christmas doesn’t necessarily mean you have to provide brand new dining facilities.

Habitat for sale?

It has been announced this week that furniture store Habitat may be put up for sale. The company’s chief executive Mark Saunders admitted that the retailer has begun a review which may lead to the sale of the company. Habitat has 38 stores across the UK and makes no secret of their intention to pursue opening more in the coming months. The company has quietly established their presence in mainland Europe with 24 Habitat store operating in France with more scattered across Germany and Spain. The company’s accounts have shown that Habitat has made significant losses in the UK and advisors Lazard & Co have been drafted in to assess whether the time has come for the owners to sell Habitat.

Founded in the 1960’s, Habitat has been renowned for introducing high fashion to the high street. The epitome of up-market yet accessible home furniture and home accessories, Habitat has become another victim of the recession. Habitat has suffered because householders have flocked to cheaper stores such as Ikea in an attempt to escape the financial squeeze. Ironically, both Ikea and Habitat are owned by the family of the billionaire founder of the Ikea chain.

Where Ikea has succeeded in difficult economic times, Habitat has floundered, appearing indulgent and unnecessary in an age that is starting to value thrift and austerity. Although no decisions have yet been made about details regarding the potential sale of Habitat, the company have pledged to persevere in a tough economic market for the time being at least.

The True Meaning and Purpose of Furniture

I read this delightful article over at www.sfgate.com and thought I'd share it with you all. It's a very interesting and heartwarming piece which many people will agree with and many won't.
"Whenever I walk into my living room, it's apparent to me that furniture must have been invented for animals. I imagine that, long ago, those first proto-dogs who entered our caves to suck the marrow from bones they helped us bring from forest to fire pit, once sated, climbed onto the boulders we arranged for seating, looked down, and then howled in complaint. I'm quite sure they gently removed those furry loincloths from sleeping cave-people and set them in piles in the coziest cave corners.

Thus, I imagine, it was a wolf-dog's need for comfort combined with an early hominid's opposable thumbs that gave rise, eventually, to the invention of the couch.

Give a dog a couch, an overstuffed recliner, a bed, even a padded footstool and you will see a body and furniture locked in an embrace so natural, so symbiotically sensual, that you'll feel obligated to ask permission before ever again putting your own butt to upholstery. Dogs do not simply sit on a chair; rather, they wrap themselves into it, jowled jaw becoming one with the overstuffed arm, chintz pillows rearranged to happily ensconce the canine frame. A dog in a lounge chair is as naturally supported as a newborn baby in the arms of a doting mother, exhausted but happily asleep with her prize warm and safe in her arms.

Back to my living room, for the moment. As a dog reclines blissfully on the folded-up fold-out, his legs dangling somehow both awkward and graceful, his snoring, eventually, disturbs the two cats nesting in the armchair across the room. They wake, stretch, and dig their needle claws into the arms. Slowly, one undulates her body, then faster and faster, finally delivering a bile-wrapped hairball onto the seat. Feeling a bit lighter, the two cats burst from the chair and pounce like wild beasts from table to shelf to chair again, finally landing on the back of the sofa that cradles said sleeping dog.

Tigers now, they stalk down this upholstered jungle tree to attack the massive brute. He awakens, chases. But to no avail. His size and strength are no match for their cunning, and they have retreated to safety: one to a bookcase, hiding in the space made available when the collected works of Mark Twain were knocked to the ground; the other (fatter, slower, but still able to hide) to the cave under the coffee table. A simple beast, this dog, he returns to the couch. Surely this scene will be played out again and again before the day is over.

My living room, it seems, is not my own. It is their habitat. The dogs' for rest, the cats' for play (and for tormenting the dogs, among their favorite games). It is, after all, their home, too, and in this home, it is furniture's true purpose and destiny to provide solace and entertainment for dogs and cats.

So, human, do not complain if your ottoman smells like your companion animal; rather, rejoice that in this otherwise cold and lonely world, they have found each other."

Vacuum Packed Mattresses - What's the Deal?

Vacuum packed mattresses are something that almost all mattress manufacturers are beginning to stock and produce, assuming they haven’t fully embraced it yet, which many have. So what is so new and unique about them and what makes them so different?

Well what’s so new and unique about vacuum packed mattresses? Well if the name doesn’t give it away then let’s clarify; it is simply a memory foam mattress that is rolled up and then vacuum sealed to make it much smaller and easier to transport (most will fit into the back of a small car though larger widths such as king sizes may have some issues). It can also make moving it up stairs easier before it is used. In a nutshell that’s it.

So what makes them different? Well to be honest nothing!

A vacuum packed mattress is pretty much the same as any other memory foam mattress; they are just as comfortable, great quality and provide a great night’s sleep. The only difference is how they arrive, however once you remove them from the packaging it takes a few minutes to reach about 95% of its full shape and then after a few more hours it fills it shape completely and voila! One quality comfortable mattress

So if you fancy giving a vacuum packed mattress a try, then why not try one of our great range here at Furniture Store 247?

Reflective Dreams – Mirrored Beds from Furniture Store 247

A few weeks ago we introduced the Reflections range of mirrored bedroom furniture and it has gone down amazingly with our customers.

When you introduce something so radical and different you have to be a little apprehensive but our faith in how much people would love this radical bedroom furniture range with its designer styling and unique looks has paid off.

The Reflections range was a complete bedroom furniture collection with wardrobes, drawer chests, bedside cabinets, dressing tables and more all available to buy at our online store. However we have to admit that we were disappointed we couldn’t offer our customers a matching bed for this collection.

Usually when a bedroom collection doesn’t offer a matching bed as part of it, it is because many other bed types will compliment it just as well. For example many wooden furniture collections have metal or chrome handles thus chrome or metal bed frames fit in nicely, and darker wood finishes on furniture tend to compliment leather beds very nicely.

However we are very happy to announce that that has been remedied and we now have began to stock beds as part of the Reflections bedroom furniture range. At the moment we only have double beds and king size beds as part of this great range, but we hope than in the future we will be able to supply our customers with other bed sizes as well, though we cannot promise anything at this time.

So you can now furnish you bedroom with a complete set of Reflections mirrored bedroom furniture, bed and all, courtesy of Furniture Store 247.

The Right Mattress

Getting a great night’s sleep comes down to what you are sleeping on, and to be fair a new bedstead is only half the battle, the other half is what mattress to choose.

Now plenty of beds get a mattress bundle with it these days, but unless you are paying a premium it’s probably going to be a very standard sprung mattress. Why? Well simply because it is the cheapest type available and if you feel you are getting a mattress and a bed for a cheap price, you feel you are getting a bargain. The problem is a good bedstead with a poor mattress isn’t bargain at all; it’s just a recipe for sleepless nights and back ache.

The typical cheap sprung mattress (or open sprung mattress) is easy to spot. It looks cheap, feels very light and feels hollow and you can feel and hear the springs creaking as you lay on it, not to the extent the springs are sticking into you (though some really cheap mattresses may fall into this category), but it just feels uncomfortable. Many describe them as feeling unstable and like being on a rocking boat; you never seem to settle in the centre and it feels like its constantly trying to push you to an over the edges.

So what are the alternatives? Well there are many different types of mattresses available on the market today so let’s point out a few.

Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Often considered the industry standard these days, pocket sprung mattresses feel quite firm compared to other mattress types and this is because they provide excellent support and stability, this doesn’t make them any less comfortable, but if you are looking for something cosier you may need to look into other mattress types.

Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory Foam Mattresses are made to alter to the shape and contour of your boy as you sleep, making them one of the most comfortable mattress types available. The comfort that a memory foam mattress can provide is almost second to none, though some people find them a little strange to get used to as you feel like you are sinking into them, and this can lead to you feeling a bit warmer in hot weather. These are definitely one of the top end mattress types

Combination Memory Foam Mattresses
Also known as Pillow Top Mattresses the mattresses comprise of a pocket springs with layers of memory foam incorporated together into one mattress. It gives a degree of both mattresses benefits with the spring unit allowing air to circulate through the mattress and the memory foam contouring to the shape of your body and typically combination mattresses tend to be a little cooler than ones made of pure memory foam. These are often considered the pinnacle of mattress comfort and the prices reflect this.

Orthopaedic Mattresses
To b fair the term Orthopaedic can be applied to any mattress type, the only real difference is that those designated as orthopaedic are always designed to be firmer than a standard mattress of the same type and provide more support for those with back problems or other joint problems; they are also often taller to make getting up out of bed easier, and are commonly bundled with divan style beds as again these are taller in nature to make getting in and out of bed easier.

So there’s a quick summary of some of the best types of mattress for a good night’s sleep, and if you are planning on getting a quality bed, surely you want to ensure the mattress is going to be good to you as well?

New Gleneagle Bedroom Furniture Range - The Corrib Collection

Furniture Store 247 have been enjoying success with the Gleneagle bedroom furniture ranges for a while now, with positive feedback from customers regarding the style, value and quality of the Gleneagle furniture ranges they have purchased from us. It’s something we are proud of and so whenever there is a new collection from Gleneagle we get quite excited about it like to make sure our customers know what to expect from the latest offerings.

So what are the latest offerings from Gleneagle? Well the answer is the Corrib range.

The Corrib bedroom furniture collection is available in two different finishes; light oak and beech. Both offer the same styling and design but as always Gleneagle like to give you choice so if you want a lighter wood, go for the light oak, and if you want darker, go for beech. The styling of the Corrib range is simple yet effective; with simple lines accented with an embossed pattern design on the fascia of the bedroom furniture items that comprise this collection. This is accented by metal handles with matching wooden inserts to add a finishing touch.

The Corrib ranges cover all you would need in a bedroom furniture set; dressing tables in varying sizes, matching stools, mirrors, wardrobes in double, large double, drawer and mirrored styling and several drawer chests and bedside cabinets to suit your needs. The Corrib beech range also has the benefit of matching headboards (perfect for a divan) which comes in various sizes; unfortunately we do not stock these for the Corrib light oak range at the moment.

Best of all Furniture Store 247 offer free delivery on the Corrib bedroom furniture ranges through the UK and Ireland, now that’s a bargain!

Eastbourne shop owner in foreign student ban row denies he's racist

Source: The Argus (http://www.theargus.co.uk)

A shop owner denied he is racist after he put up a sign banning foreign students.

But he denied his stance is racist - and says he also has the backing of town chiefs.

Mr Moffet said he was driven to take action after groups of students used his showroom to eat takeaway food.

He claimed his patience snapped on the third time he found students lounging on his furniture tucking into their McDonald’s dinner.

Mr Moffett said: “We have a small downstairs showroom selling general furniture.

“I came down to see four students on a three piece suite, four lying on one of the beds and another two sitting on the bedroom furniture.

“First of all the smell was terrible and fabric really holds in smells.

“Secondly one of them had spilled drink on one of my coffee tables and thirdly we found gherkins all over the floor when they left.

“They obviously didn't like the gherkins.”

Mr Moffett added: “After the students left we thought enough was enough and put the sign up because we have to sell the furniture to the public and it's not fair on them.”

The sign on the shop, in the Arndale Centre, Eastbourne, reads: “Polite notice: As this shop is of no interest to foreign students we are asking you not to enter.”

When asked by The Argus if he thought the sign was racist, Mr Moffett said: “Not at all.”

He said he recognised the contribution the influx of overseas students has on the Eastbourne economy.

Mr Moffett said: “Foreign students bring in a tremendous amount of money into the town and our business. Every year the host families need to buy new beds and things and they get them from us.

“So I have nothing against the foreign students but they have to abide by our rules.”

Mr Moffett added that there had been no further incidents since the sign went up two weeks ago and hardly anyone had complained.

He said: “So far I have only had one person ring me up and call me a racist.

“He was from Worthing though and seemed to think he was Mr Sussex.

“Certain people need to get a life. I am in business and will not have anyone ruining it.”

Mr Moffett said he has the backing of both Penny Shearer, who chairs the Overseas Student Advisory Committee on Eastbourne Borough Council and Norman Kinnock, head of tourism at the council.

Neither were prepared to comment but the council released a statement.

It said: “Any retail business will want to encourage customers to come into their premises to view and possibly sample the goods. However anybody that abuses or damages the stock will be unwelcome.

“The particular area of the store in question is a showroom and is not for use by the general public. Local people are aware of this but our young visitors may need this explaining.

“The council works very closely with language schools to make sure the messages of good behaviour are understood but there will always be those who choose to ignore instruction.

“Any business that has a problem with students is welcome to contact Penny Shearer and discuss the issue with her.”

Pretty crazy stuff but you have to see both sides of the story, however there are definite benefits to being an online-only furniture store!

Leather Furniture; Yes or No

Leather furniture is popular for a reason, well many reasons actually. It is hard wearing, compared to fabric furniture, it is easier to clean and maintain, it’s comfortable and let’s face it leather looks great (well not always but as a rule of thumb it does, there are some truly gaudy leather furniture items out there, but each to their own).

So with so many bonuses what are the down sides? Well it can be comfortable, but it can be very cold when first sat on and in hot weather unpleasant (this depends on the leather normally). It can be noisy and creaky if it is tighter pulled and stitched leather (more common in older more traditional sofas and chairs). It is generally very expensive and there is always the fact it simply is ‘leather’ and we all know what leather is made from, so there is the ethical issue as well.

So what to do, well we aren’t going to judge someone for buy leather or not, that is a personal choice and nothing to do with us, we are just pointing out a there are alternatives. We sell leather furniture, and we sell fake leather furniture, we believe in offering choice.

Fake leather, imitation leather, or as it is most commonly know today ‘faux leather’ (mainly as it sounds less tacky) is very popular and unless you are something of an expert it is often difficult to tell the difference. This can of course depend on the quality of faux leather used in the piece of home furniture in question, but good quality material is very comparable to the real deal – hardwearing, easy to clean and comfortable. Sure it will normally fall short of high quality leather in its aspects, but not too far behind, and this is not a given (cheap leather may even be surpassed!)

So what can we offer those looking for a choice, well lets see!

For the lounge we have a selection of living room furniture but we will just show and alternative for each case.

For the leather side there is the Seattle collection which features a stylish leather tub chair, leather tub sofa and matching ‘Kube’ which is a leather faced cube shape perfect as a stool or a footstool and matches the Bonanza Leather design of the chair and sofa.

For the faux leather side once again there is the Seattle tub chair, which is in a brown traditional leather effect design, but otherwise emulates the real leather chair in shape and size. If you are after a chair with matching sofa, there is the London collection which comprises of a classic designed tub style sofa and matching tub chair in a brown faux leather finish, it is very impressive to say the least.

Moving over to the dining furniture area we have our two best sellers on each side of the line the Cornell leather dining chair range and the Guinness faux leather dining chair range. Both of these are identical in design; both are classic rollback dining chairs with comfortable padded backs and sprung seats, each is built on a solid wood frame. The differences are that the Cornell dining chairs are finished in quality leather and the Guinness dining chairs in impressive faux leather. To the Average Joe they are going to appear the same, but a closer look and you can tell, just, that they are different, but either is a fine addition to a dining room.

So there you go, with just a brief look at our ranges we found some good cases for leather furniture and for faux leather furniture, at the en of the day its down to you, but we just wanted you to know that there is always a choice, and that is what matters the most.

Dining Furniture Solutions

Summer is still here; well kind of! The unpredictable rain seems to be putting a literal damper on that. But now and then we still get the odd day we can fire up the barbecue and get friends round in the garden for some drinks and food. But with the year past the half way mark (seems to have flown by) and with that the colder weather and darker nights just a month or so away it will soon be time to put away the garden furniture and think about taking any get-togethers indoors.

So we thought it might be time to look at what Furniture Store 247 can offer those looking for a new dining set, or some dining furniture, for the more festive season, or party season, on its way and the parties, meals and family gatherings that are fairly inevitable.

Now people will think, “Hang on its nearly 5 months until Christmas” but a few things to remember; those months will fly past, you don’t want to be buying new furniture as your buying gifts and presents, the festive season tends to begin its run in October with many people having Halloween parties, then bonfire night, then Christmas and new year, and it’s always better to plan ahead. Now sure not all of those may be a sit down meal, but many people prefer a nice dinner over a full blown party (and it saves on damage from drunken guests dancing!).

So if you really want to have some new furniture in time for Christmas and New Year, if nothing else (and those with American heritage might want a thanksgiving dinner party), then really you need to think about it now.

So what options does Furniture Store 247 have to offer you? Well we can break it down into dining sets, dining tables, dining chairs and dining furniture such as sideboards.

Now most people will be looking for a complete dining set (table and chairs), and we have a few quality choices in this respect. Depending on your styling we have minimal, modern and traditional.

Minimal – Both the Denver oak dining set, and the Oakleigh dining set both fill this criteria nicely, with the Oakleigh set adding a traditional touch and the Denver set a more modern feel. Both come with matching dining chairs with comfy padded seats, though the Denver is only available with 6 chairs with a standard table, whereas the Oakleigh set has 2 differing sizes of extendable tables with 6 or 8 dining chairs dependant on the table chose.

Modern – Well the Denver covers the modern bracket as well, but along with this there is the Ella glass dining set with 6 matching chairs, and the Bella beech and silver dining set this time with 4 chairs that match the design. However we also have many sets that feature the Guinness faux leather dining chair range or the Cornell leather dining chair range. These almost identical ranges (except for the material obviously) bring a very stylish, sleek and modern look to any dining table and that why we have a big range of tables to go with them, extendable and standard.

Traditional – The Trafalgar rustic oak dining set is the way to go here. Made from the finest oak, with a medium size twin leaf extending table and complete with 6 solid oak ladder-back dining chairs this epitomises style and quality with a traditional almost country living look.

Now there are more choices but these are full sets as opposed to buying them individually, but an example of one of our best selling traditional collections would be the Irish Coast range, made from reclaimed Baltic Pine with a choice of 2 types of matching chairs this is a stunning traditional styled range.

Then of course there are extras such as sideboards, not essential, but they can add a perfect touch to a dining room, and can be invaluable for storing extras for you dinner party, from bottles of wine, to serving trays or platters that you don’t want to clutter the table with.

Now I could go on and on, but it’s best you just have a look for yourself, just follow the link to our dining furniture section at our website and your bound to find something you like.

Rustic Oak Furniture – Quality, Style and Versatility!

Well ok maybe it’s cool and maybe it’s not, but there is no doubting it is popular. How do we know this? Well quite simply due to the demand we are seeing in our orders for items from the Trafalgar rustic oak collection.

Over the past few months our rustic oak furniture range from Trafalgar has literally flown of the shelves (well out of the warehouse, it would break the shelves!) with orders ranging from one or 2 pieces of furniture from the collection such as console tables, display cabinets and bookcases, to full blown sets, mostly bedroom furniture sets or dining furniture sets.

However we have noted that it seems to be not just the excellent build and quality of our rustic oak furniture that compels our customers, nor is it the stylish yet traditional design, but it is those things combined with the sheer range and the “mix and match” factor it gives. For example the rustic oak collection has 2 different desk/dressers, which can be matched with a stool, or you could use one of the 2 matching dining chairs with it for more back support and it wouldn’t look a bit out of place.

It seems that our customers agree as many buy 1 or 2 pieces of furniture to match up for a desired effect, or buy extra items to match a typical set, such as a bookcase, TV unit or display cabinet to go with the bedroom items they have (then again most people have TV’s in the bedroom so it makes sense).

So if you are after a very versatile and traditional look for one or more rooms in your home, you can’t go wrong with the rustic oak collection by Trafalgar and judging by our orders, you seem to be in agreement.

More Hi-Gloss Bedroom Furniture? Sure Thing!

You may remember our article on the hi-gloss range of bedroom furniture from Gleneagle. It talked about the Carlton and Clarion bedroom ranges. Both of these were similar designed sets yet had a differing hi-gloss finish (white and black respectively) but had the same walnut wood finish otherwise. Well since then these have become huge sellers for us at Furniture Store 247, and along with a high demand for these, customers have asked if we plan on adding more variations of the hi-gloss style.

Our response was “of course we are!” and we have.

Our first hi-gloss range we are going to mention is the Shelbourne range. This gorgeous hi-gloss bedroom furniture collection keeps the same styling as the Clarion and Carlton ranges, meaning it keeps the same stylish retro look but take a different slant on it. The different slant in question here is the fact the hi-gloss is in a gentle cream colour and the wood finish is lighter as this time it is in oak. This means it provides a more spacious an lighter look to your bedroom compared to the darker walnut used in the Carlton and Clarion ranges and means it blends in as opposed to stands out.

Then we have the Savoy range, as before it keeps the same design as all of the other hi-gloss bedroom furniture ranges from Gleneagle, but it goes for a clean, crisp minimalist style. In a pure white hi-gloss finish, there are not wood effects this time round; the entire piece of furniture is in a hi-gloss white, with the only accent being the chrome finish handles. There is little about the Savoy range that says subtle, but then again this hi-gloss retro style isn’t about subtle it’s about being seen and looking cool and judging by our sales, you agree wholeheartedly.

Both the Savoy and Shelbourne ranges offer a complete bedroom solution with drawer chests, wardrobes, dressing table sand more available from both ranges. You can see Furniture Store 247’s full range of Gleneagle bedroom furniture along with the hi-gloss ranges by clicking here.

Furniture Store on Channel 4 - The Home Show

Just a quick reminder to all our customers that the furniture supplied by us here at Furniture Store 247 to Channel 4 for The Home Show will be featured on tonight’s (Thursday 4th June) episode based at Biggin Hill.

We are pretty excited to see how things will turn out, especially as this show has been a huge success and the projects we’ve seen so far on previous episodes have been amazing.

As big fans Furniture Store 247 we happy to donate some of our furniture to the show, and delighted they chose to use our York occasional chair in their design plans. It may seem like a small thing, only one piece of living room furniture, and sure we’d have loved them to use some of our stylish bedroom furniture or dining furniture, but we aren’t the designers, they are. We’re just stoked they used us and hope it shows to the public how good our furniture is.

The Home Show can be seen on Channel 4 at 8pm on Thursdays – don’t miss it!

Gleneagle still alive and kicking.

Rumours have been circulating recently about the demise of Gleneagle Furniture prompted no doubt by the closure of the UK Factory. Well we thought it was best to quickly reassure you that Gleneagle is still trading.

Production has simply transferred to a state of the art factory in Ireland. All the Gleneagle ranges are still produced and are available to customers in Ireland and the UK. We still stock all existing ranges and Gleneagle show no sign of slowing down. In fact they have just launched a new High Gloss Range which is available from Furniture Store 247.

So just to refresh, you can purchase all existing products from Gleneagle and they will be delivered. Gleneagle bedroom furniture is still the best value for money and the new state of the art Irish Factory means it could even be better quality.

Furniture Store 247 makes its TV debut.

Furniture Store 247 was recently featured in the new series of The Home Show on Channel 4. We were asked to supply furniture for a project that took place in Biggin Hill Kent. The show is due to be shown soon on Channel 4. If you haven’t heard of the Home Show let me give you a brief overview of what the shows about. The show features architect George Clarke.

George comes from a successful business background, he was partner in a architects firm and a property development company. He has presented a number of other similar shows like “Build a new life”, “Property dreams”, “A Dream Home Abroad” and Restoration Man. His aims are to make architecture popular and accessible to the public.

The shows in the home show are designed to improve people’s homes, George is given a budget some shows this is £40,000 others £75,000 and this money is spent redesigning the home to better suit the family. Sometimes this means structural work, redecoration and adjusting plumbing and fixtures and fittings.

At the beginning of the show George arrives to get a feel of the house he stays the night to experience the problems that exist in the design of the house. George is then given a budget, he makes the house into a blank canvas by painting it white and then coming up with a new and improved design. The family are involved in picking the furniture by deciding what furniture they would be, if they were furniture. The family are sent away from the work and return to see the new design.

What Makes a Bed Comfy?

When you think about it we spend more time in bed than almost any other single place. Most of us aim for 6-8 hours of sleep a night and we want that to be as restful and comfortable as possible, but this isn’t always the case and many of us will fall short of our required sleep quota either by not sleeping for as long as we need, or having our rest broken up by intermittent waking moments.

So what to do about this? Well restless sleep comes from several factors such as stress, illness, medical conditions and simply being uncomfortable. This is where the right sleeping conditions can come in to play, which means making yourself as comfy as possible at night.

Now the right bed, or pillows, duvets or mattress wont cure you of an illness, solve medical conditions (with maybe some exceptions which I’ll explain later) or alleviate you of stress, but it can help. If you fall into the “uncomfortable” category then getting these things right can make all the difference.

Now before I carry on with what kinds of things make a bed more comfortable, let me just go back to my paragraph above. The right bed or mattress won’t solve a medical condition – of course it won’t – but it can help. How? Well it depends on the condition.

Orthopaedic mattresses can make a big difference in people who suffer with back pains or other joint ailments.

Divan beds are much better for people who have trouble getting in and out of bed due to the height of a divan, especially with a wider support mattress on top.

Adjustable beds can be made to contour to your body and help you sit up in bed as well.

Hypoallergenic mattresses as well as natural latex mattresses can alleviate allergy problems.

As for illness or stress, well a really comfy bed or mattress can make the difference between a restless night and a much more bearable night.

Now getting back on track, what makes a bed more comfy, and what gives that perfect nights sleep? Well first let’s look at what gives a poor nights sleep as a rule.

A poor mattress

An old or cheap mattress can lead to a very poor nights sleep. Mattresses do not last forever, that is a fact, though newer mattresses with higher quality will tend to have a much longer lease on life.

Many people forget to turn their mattress when needed (many new mattresses do not need turning, though it will always inform you if it does and how often) which leads to them wearing unevenly and this in turn can lead to the mattress sagging, or springs breaking or pushing through.

Cheaper mattresses will tend to feel just that – cheap. This means they will feel flimsy, you will notice bumps and springs more, and the materials will be less than desirable.

Finding the right mattress mean knowing what is right for you, but the choices out there are pretty varied meaning there will normally be one kind for you. The most popular kinds of mattress are normally;

Memory foam mattresses that adjust to your body shape when you sleep but return to normal when you leave the bed.

Pocket sprung mattresses which are the most commonly found mattresses and are great for supporting the spine. They can feel a little hard to some people, though this is the point.

Orthopaedic Mattresses are normally deeper than standard mattresses and designed to go on higher framed beds such as divans, this means when a person had to get in and out of bed, they can use a heightened seated position making standing much simpler.

Pillow top mattresses are the top end of the mattress spectrum comprising of a soft pillow like layer on top and then the mattress itself underneath. The top layer is normally soft foam with the bottom being made up of varying layers of foam in differing firmness for comfort.

There are many other kinds such as coil spring mattresses, organic and natural latex mattresses and you can even get vacuum packed mattresses but these are the most common and popular kinds and each can give a differing feel to your bed.

The right bed

Your bed (bedstead or bed frame) can be equally as important as any mattress. The most important thing is do not let appearance be your only reasoning for purchasing a bed. Sure it may look great, but it’s how it feels that is important.

Divans beds are the best choice for people with conditions such as arthritis or any ailments that make getting up and sitting down difficult. As they are naturally taller than a normal bedstead and usually will come with a support mattress or orthopaedic mattress this makes life so much easier from a mobility perspective.

Sprung slatted bases are the best way to go if you are choosing any other kind of bed frame, be it a metal bedstead, wooden or even a leather bed. The benefits are that the spring and resistance provide more comfort.

Some beds provide just solid slats which screw into the bed frame, or solid metal slats or framework for the mattress to lie on. Though theses are fine they can often feel stiff and over time can feel quite hard and have little give in them.

Adjustable beds can be the ultimate in comfort, but are also great for people who have trouble getting in or out of bed, or sitting up in bed. Of course electric adjustable beds aren’t cheap, but for the amount of time you spend in your bed, it is worth the price.

Bedding for comfort

Pillows are one of the main problems when it comes to bedding. People often use pillows that are either too fluffy and strain the neck, or pillows which have gone flat and provide no real support. Replacing them once or twice a year is beneficial to make sure they don’t lose any support, and consider trying different types of pillow from support pillows, to firm, soft and medium resistances and find what feels natural to your.

Duvets should be what makes you feel warm and secure. Changing your duvet in summer or winter for a differing tog size should help a lot as well.

At the end of the day it comes down to what you feel most comfortable in, but a good bed with good support along with a mattress suited to your needs and some cosy bedding will make all the difference.

Furniture Packs and Buy to Let Furniture

With the credit crunch affecting the economy worldwide it’s hard to think that people are still buying houses. Sure the prices are low, but it seems such a crazy time to be doing it unless you have the funds to buy home outright, or secure the expensive mortgages available. However it is exactly that point that has made buying to let such a lucrative prospect at the moment.

How? Well as people cannot afford to buy, then the only option is to rent – thus those who can buy can pick up a bargain and make a tidy sum letting homes. The thing is to not out-price yourself and make sure you can attract tenants and keep them happy; after all an empty house no one will rent from you is just a bottomless money pit.

So how do you achieve this?

Well first impressions count and thus make sure the place looks good, that means good décor and in a good condition. But more importantly take into account that the credit crunch is in effect. What does this mean? It means people are looking to save money where they can, and that means not having to furnish a house they are renting. The piece of mind knowing that you can just move in and the rest is pretty much done is a big comforting factor to many people.

Of course furnishing a house is quite a daunting thought, especially when you know it’s not you that will be living there, but you can take comfort in the fact that most people will be willing to pay more for a house they can simple move into with all the work done. It also means when old tenants leave and new ones arrive it is a much less drawn out scenario with no beds, sofas and other large items of furniture to be remove (this also saves on accidental damage during a removal).

The good thing is that buy to let is such a big business these days that there are many places that specialise in buy to let furniture, or furniture packs.

The premise of furniture packs (or furniture packages as they are often known) it to provide a complete solution to a room in a home, or to provide the basics for a few rooms (these are often known as starter packs.

A few examples could be a full bedroom furniture set comprising of bed, wardrobe, bedside tables and a chest of drawers, or something along the lines of just a few bedroom furniture pieces, allowing the bed to be provided by the tenant.

Dining furniture
would normally include a table and chair set, though some also have sideboards.

Starter packs are normally a more budget version of room specific sets (such as dining furniture or bedroom furniture) or a combination such as a dining table and chairs, a bed and maybe a sofa.

Most furniture packs come in a variety of styles and materials to help you make your home more appealing to prospective tenants. The cost is normally a considerable saving than buying the items separately, and of course they are all delivered at the same time, and from the same place, making life easier if you have any problems or need replacement or extra items.

So furniture packs can be a great money saver and money maker in for those looking for a buy to let investment.

New Hi-Gloss Bedroom Furniture Ranges from Gleneagle

A few years ago a high gloss (or Hi Gloss) finish on furniture was considered tacky. Everything had to be in a wood effect (pine, beech, oak, maple and so on) or very minimalistic (or both).

The look of gloss finished doors or drawer fronts with a wood frames was something more akin to the late 70’s and early 80’s, and many of us could look back at our photos of that time and see something along those lines adorning our bedroom or living room.

However, today this style is once again in popular demand. Why? It’s that whole concept of styles coming back around again. What was cool becomes tacky, what was tacky becomes retro, and what is retro becomes cool and fashionable – the circle is complete.

Now that isn’t to say we want the same tacky furniture we had back in 1980, of course we don’t, what we want is a similar style but in quality materials, built to last and designed to impress.

Well Gleneagle Furniture (not one to be behind the current styles) have stepped up once again with several hi gloss finish furniture ranges – the Carlton Range, the Clarion Range, The Savoy Range and the Shelbourne Range. However as the Savoy range is more of a minimalistic white bedroom furniture range, we’ll leave that for now and look at the Clarion and Carlton ranges.

Now the first thing about these bedroom ranges you will notice it they are very similar, and by similar I mean the same. That’s because they are, with the obvious exception of the fact the Carlton range is in a hi gloss black finish and the Carlton in hi gloss white, but the point is they are offering choice in finish but still both retaining the same great quality and style you expect of Gleneagle Furniture.

Both these bedroom sets have a dark walnut wood finish on the main frame word, but the doors and drawers are all in a hi gloss finish based on the range you want. Blanket boxes have a front panel that matches the gloss finish, and beds have a inset in the headboard and bed footer with the same styling.

You can get the same furniture items for each of these bedroom furniture sets including wardrobes (double and single) dressers and stools, bedside units, drawer chests, beds in differing sizes, mirrors and more meaning each provides a complete bedroom solution. As a matter of fact at Furniture Store 247 we have both single bed and double bed furniture sets for both the Clarion and Carlton ranges, saving you money and you can add to it with individual items as you wish.

So if you are looking for something a little retro, but stylish and quality for your bedroom, check out the Clarion Hi Gloss and Carlton Hi Gloss ranges from Gleneagle.

Oakleigh Furniture Vs Trafalgar Rustic Oak Furniture

Furniture Store 247 has a couple of good recommendations if you are looking for some traditional styled furniture for your home.

First up we have the new best selling rustic oak furniture range by Trafalgar Furniture. I’ve talked about this before but I’m going to mention what the positives and negatives of this range over our other best selling traditional furniture range from Oakleigh Furniture.

Well both of these sets have a full range of occasional furniture. What’s occasional furniture? Occasional furniture is these pieces of furniture that can really go anywhere such as end tables, or lamp tables, display cabinets and bookcases, console tables and sideboards. Any of these will add a classic touch to a living room, hallway, bedroom or dining room.

Other occasional furniture in both the Oakleigh range and the Trafalgar rustic oak range includes coffee tables, TV units and cabinets and hi-fi units, but these are more aimed at just the living room or lounge (though they can accent a bedroom furniture set very nicely).

Both of these quality furniture ranges have dining tables, extendable dining tables and matching dining chairs. Both also have a variety of sideboards in large and small sizes, but the Trafalgar rustic oak range has a little more versatility in its range of console tables (one of which even integrates a wine rack).

When it comes to the bedroom, both Oakleigh and Trafalgar furniture have most of the bases covered but shine in areas where the other lacks to a degree. Both sets have beds that match, but where Trafalgar only has a double bed and a king size bed, Oakleigh have s single bed too. Both have various wardrobes, tall boys and drawer chests, Trafalgar provide 2 differing types of dressing tables/desks with a matching stool, which Oakleigh does not.

So both these furniture ranges offer traditional styling that can be used throughout the home; Oakleigh being finished in solid ash, whereas Trafalgar have the rustic oak finish. Both offer a few minor extra pieces of furniture to the other as mentioned above, though nothing really deal-breaking. Finally the Oakleigh range is perhaps a little less expensive than the rustic Oak range from Trafalgar.

However in summary the positives and negatives are so minimal, you can be sure either of these ranges will provide you with quality furniture that can benefit your home. So at the end of the day it’s just comes down to personal tastes, inevitably the choice is yours.
